Such as, my dad suggested this stock for me to buy, ATHX. It just went up 25% today, and I’m wondering why. Where can I find this out reliably?

Hey I wish I knew that…check out the site bloomberg.com all stocks are available there. Just put symbol and away you go. Once you get the symbol and the company research the company financial see what caused the stock to trade up so much. Could it be there quarterly financials were good or some important findings in the company could have potentially given the gains that you claim..Good Luck!
There are a number of them.
Yahoo still has message boards for the stock. If you put in a quote it will have a link on the left that says “message board”. Or go to:

There is Motley fool which has all sorts of stock information and discussions. In the past there were many more. I think Silicon Investor still exists. The latter was one of the biggies during the internet bubble, and the earlier days of the internet.
While you might find some information that you might be looking to find, for the most part many of those discussions and opinions are rather worthless as you get too many uninformed opinions on both sides and you have to do so much personal filtering of the opinions that you might as well do the research yourself.
In the end you will do much better learning to evaluate on your own. But sometimes you can find a few jewels that can get you thinking or looking in a particular directions and that can make or save you some money once you do your own research.
But as I said, such thoughtful opinion is sometimes too rare. You hear a lot of hype on those boards.
Good Luck.
